Log rollers have taken their sport indoors, and their competition too. For the second year in a row, Cook County was well represented at the National Logrolling Tournament held in Hudson, Wisconsin on Saturday, November 19.

World champion Lucy Shaw competed in the 10-and-under age group for log rolling and in the 18-and-under speed birling competition.

In speed birling Lucy managed to run and stay balanced on top of the log while getting it to rotate 36 times in one minute, one of her best scores ever and a high number for anyone. High enough, in fact, to win the competition.

While facing several top-notch opponents in log rolling, Shaw once again managed to prevail and win the 10-and-under National Championship. Shaw’s two first places helped her final score for the year, and she placed 3rd in the 18 and under Lumberjack Log Rolling Super Series.

This matched her teammate’s, Jessica Berg-Collman’s finish in 2010.

The Super Series takes competitors combined finishes in all of the meets over the last year and averages them out. This was a tremendous finish to a tremendous year for Shaw, who, sadly is moving to Texas with her family at the end of the month.

Rapidly improving Paige Everson showed what hard work and dedication could do by placing 4th in the 10-andunder log rolling competition. Paige also placed 4th in the 18-under speed birling with 31 rotations. A great job by a great kid.

Lucy’s dad, Barry Shaw, showed his moxie by placing second in the adult sport division. Both Barry and his wife, Vicki, have been very instrumental in coaching log rolling to Cook County’s youth and will be sorely missed by the team. But they plan to come back for a couple of log rolling meets in the summer, and they plan to introduce Texas to the art of log rolling as Lucy continues to train for future events.

Several other competitors couldn’t attend the tournament because of conflicts. Most notable was Jessica Berg- Collman who was participating in a basketball jamboree, and Wellesley Howard-Larsen who was attending several birthday parties.
