Locals compete in Chequamegon Mountain Bike Festival

Several Cook County mountain bike enthusiasts joined thousands of other mountain bike racers in the 38th running of the Chequamegon MTB Festival “Revel in the Woods”.

Three races were held on September 18, with the Chequamegon 40 the feature race. The 40-mile event is held on the Birkie Ski trail, forest roads and snowmobile routes. It starts in downtown Hayward and finishes at the Great Hall in Cable, Wisconsin. A 16-mile event and Little Loggers race, a 15-minute continuous loop course, are the other races held that day.

Will Surbaugh, who is attending college in Colorado, came back to race and placed 30th in the pro-elite division. His time was 2:28:16.

Will took 37th place in the famed 100-mile Stages Cycling Leadville race held mid-August.

Jim Joynes, 56, Grand Marais, placed 51st out of 1,240 entrants in the Chequamegon 40. Jim’s time was 2:34:24 and he placed ninth in his age group.

Max Wahlers 59, Grand Marais, finished 835 overall out of 1,200 riders in the 40-mile race. Max crossed the line 3:38:26.

Claire LaVigne, 20, Grand Marais, biked the 40-mile course in 3:49:22, placing 923.
