Locals compete at the Chequamegon Fat Tire festival

A half dozen locals lined up with 2,100 other participants and competed in the 36th annual Chequamegon 40 Fat Tire Festival held Sept. 15 from Cable to Hayward, Wisconsin.

Jim Joynes, Grand Marais, was the top finisher, completing the course in 2:56:42 on a hot day. Jim’s wife, Shani, completed the course in 3:48:10.

Max Wahlers, Grand Marais, finished in 3:43:59 with Tim Kennedy, 5:23 and David Eckel, 6:27:24 also completing the trail race.

Payson McElvee of Durango, Colorado won the race in 2:08:44.

Will Surbaugh, 16, placed 12th in the Short and Fat 16-mile event, finishing in 1:00:05.

Daxton Mock, 17, Lake Mills, Wisconsin, won the race with a finish time of 55:44.
