They may look like mild-mannered North Shore gals, but Amber Wright, Laurie Senty and her daughters, Kelly Senty and Tess Senty, are Iron Women! Thewomen, all of Grand Marais, participated in the Liberty Triathlon at Lake Independence in the Twin Cities on June 12, 2010.
The Sentys took part in the long course, which includes a 1.2-mile swim, a 56-mile bike ride and a 13.1- mile run. Laurie Senty, 50, placed second in her age group, finishing in 6 hours 11 minutes in the 50-54 age group. Although she finished second in her age group, Laurie felt she could have done better. “It was not a good race for me. I didn’t do well on nutrition for this race and I struggled. But it is a good course and it was fun.”
Daughter Kelly, 26, also finished second in her division, the 25-29 age group, with a time of 5 hours 41 minutes.
Tess, 24, also finished well, especially considering this is only her second long race and she was recovering from a torn meniscus. She completed the course in 5 hours 59 minutes, fourth in the 25-29 age group (her age group because of her birthdate).
Wright, in her first marathon, participated in the Olympic distance race—a 1.5K swim, 40K bike ride and 10K run. She finished ninth in the 30-34 age group, completing the course in 2 hours 46 minutes.
“Amber did great for her first triathlon,” said Laurie Senty.
Laurie Senty ran her first 50-mile marathon in celebration of her 50th birthday in February 2010. Since then she has run a number of other races—10K, 15K races and marathons, including the Boston Marathon. Kelly and Tess have run some of the races with her and they are now training, along with Amber Wright, to run in the half distance Iron Man in Chisago, MN on Sunday, July 25. Also joining them will be Josh Rice from ThePie Place.
TheSentys are also training for the Louisville Iron Man to be held in Louisville, KY on August 29, 2010.
