The Cook County Curling Club was busy last weekend, March 13-15, with 16 teams taking part in the Charles J. Futterer Memorial Open Bonspiel. This fun-filled event was truly a family affair with the children of Charles J. and Geri Futterer—Chuck, Bruce, Craig and Karen Futterer— playing on the same team. Also participating were grandchildren Joe and Logan Futterer with their first cousin Abby Tofte Hedstrom and friend Jenny Urick playing on their own team. These two teams played against each other in the D Event on Sunday morning.
The younger Futterer team went into this spiel with the least experience, but you would not have guessed that, as you watched them play on Sunday morning. Even though Uncle Craig Futterer’s team won the D Event, Joe Futterer’s team made them work for the title.
The Brian Smith team from Grand Marais won the main event after a very good game with the Jack Carr team from Thunder Bay. The first few ends of the game were back and forth with each team scoring one. In the fifth end Jack scored two against Brian, putting them ahead in the game.
In the sixth end, Rory Smith made an awesome shot which put them ahead by one in the sixth end. They went on to steal another point in the seventh and in the eighth end Jack didn’t even throw his last stone.
It’s been seven years since a local team has won the right to add its name to the plaque at the club. Congratulations to the Brian Smith team for this accomplishment. The last team to grace its name on the plaque was Bob Spry’s team in 2008.
The Casey Josephson team from Two Harbors won the “B” Event with Don Belluz team from Thunder Bay as runners-up. The Mark Pedersen team from Grand Marais won the “C” Event with Dale Wirta from Thunder Bay as runners-up.
The Club will end its curling season on March 25 with league play downs.
The curling club is already looking forward to and making plans for the 2015-2016 season. If you would like to be a part of curling for next year, please contact the club at www.cookcountycurlingclub.com.
