Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Snowmobile Safety Training was held in December at the old airfield on Devil Track Lake in Grand Marais. There was barely enough snow for the field test, but students were able to complete the final step in the safety training.

Successfully completing the training were Tanner Berglund, Lucas Sheils, Paige Everson, John VanderHeiden, Jonathan Huskey and Jonah Schmidt.

All students passing the course receive a temporary permit and a copy of the new state snowmobile laws.

As of October 1, 2002 any resident born after December 31, 1976 must have a safety certificate to operate a snowmobile anywhere in Minnesota.

All Minnesota snowmobilers are reminded to ride safely and check conditions frequently.

The DNR issues these safety reminders: Don’t drink; slow down (particularly at night, on rough or icy surfaces, and when approaching high snow banks) and stay right; be prepared for emergencies; stay alert—heed caution and hazard signs; avoid traveling across bodies of water when uncertain of ice thickness and strength; dress in layers, wear a helmet and face covering, avoid loose scarves; watch the weather and check conditions before riding; bring a buddy; and report accidents right away.
