Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Snowmobile Safety Training was held December 6, 2014 at the old airfield on Devil Track Lake in Grand Marais. The weather cooperated this year—there was enough snow for the field test and it wasn’t below zero.

Successfully completing the training were Trevor Berglund, Tate Crawford, Zarchary Fredrickson, Alyssa Fenstad- Lashinski, Sarah Poznanovic, Hattie Splett, Lucas Stadler and Riley Tiboni.

All students passing the course received their temporary permits and a copy of the new state snowmobile laws.

As of October 1, 2002 any resident born after December 31, 1976 must have a safety certificate to operate a snowmobile anywhere in Minnesota.

All Minnesota snowmobilers are reminded to ride safely and check conditions frequently.

The DNR issues these safety reminders: Don’t drink; slow down (particularly at night, on rough or icy surfaces, and when approaching high snow banks) and stay right; be prepared for emergencies; stay alert—heed caution and hazard signs; avoid traveling across bodies of water when uncertain of ice thickness and strength; dress in layers, wear a helmet and face covering, avoid loose scarves; watch the weather and check conditions before riding; bring a buddy; and report accidents right away.
