The Cook County Community YMCA North Shore Rollers did quite well at the recent Namekogon River Roll-Off. The next big meet is the Lumberjack World Championships held in the same venue in Hayward, Wisconsin. The Rollers are (L-R) Dominic Wilson, Paige Everson, Taylor Everson, Ali Duclos and Alexis Plummer.

The last time Dominic Wilson and Dominick Magnone rolled against each other, Magnone, of Chicago, Illinois, came back to win three falls to two. This last Sunday, July 16, however, the tables were turned when the two met once again in the finals for the U-13 boys division at the Namekagon River Roll-Off in Hayward, Wisconsin in the Lumberjack Bowl, site of the upcoming 2016 Lumberjack World Championships. This time Wilson, down two falls to zero, came back to win the next three falls to beat Magnone and take home the first place trophy.

While Wilson was the only first place winner for the North Shore Rollers, he was hardly the only one to make the podium.

Starting things off for the North Shore Rollers was Alexis Plummer who placed third in the deep U-7 division. All told there were 30 contestants in the U-7 field.

Next, Ali Duclos and Taylor Everson rolled in the deepest field of the day, with 35 girls in the U-10 age bracket. Duclos ended up in second place while Everson finished fifth.

Despite losing her first match to Hayward roller Holly Miller, Paige Everson had a great day, winning six straight back-to-back matches to claim third place, a tremendous finish for Everson.

North Shore Roller Tanner Collman of Cromwell also fought back from a first round loss to battle back and place third in the boys’ U-10 division. His sisters Brandi and Amber Collman also rolled well in the girls’ U-13 bracket, just missing out on medals. The Collmans’ aunt is Julie Collman of Grand Marais.

Now the big meet of the year is almost here. The Lumberjack World Championships will be held July 28-30, and with any luck four or five North Shore Rollers could come back with medals— and maybe even with a first place championship.
