Since 1994, local quilters have been meeting under various names, but the results have been the same—spectacular quilts for a multitude of good causes. Many of the wonderful locally made quilts will be on display at the Johnson Heritage Post in Grand Marais beginning November 20 until January 3.
Anyone interested in quilting is encouraged to see the show. Visit with quilters at the opening reception on Friday, November 20 from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. Gallery hours are Thursday through Sunday, 1:00 to 4:00 p.m.
Or, quilting fans are invited to join one of the local quilting groups, Sawtooth Mountain Quilters or the Pincushion Quilters.
The Sawtooth Mountain Quilters began in 1994. In the early years this group got together to share their hobby, carrying sewing machines to members’ homes to work on their projects. This has changed over the years, and now most meetings are just to get together to share friendship and to bring competed projects for “show and tell.” Themeetings are on the first and third Wednesdays of each month, with the time and location subject to change.
Sawtooth Mountain Quilters gives a “fire quilt” to those who have lost homes to fire. In 2009, members each made quilts for Project Linus, which were donated to children who are ill or in other need of comfort.
The Pincushion Quilters was formed in 2002. Pincushion Quilters includes quilters of all skill levels with a wide variety of quilting interests. In the past the group has participated in the Cook County Fair and the making of the raffle quilt for the Grand Marais Playhouse production Quilters.
Members have made quilts for the Quilts of Valor project for wounded vets and for Project Linus for kids in hospitals and shelters. They meet on the first and third Thursday of each month at 10:00 a.m. at Crystal’s Log Cabin Quilts.
