Local photographer Travis Novitsky will be featured on Northern Nights, Starry Skies on PBS North


 

 

A documentary exploring the dark skies of northeastern Minnesota and the Anishinaabe connection to those skies will make its broadcast premiere on Saturday, November 26 on PBS North.

Co-produced by WDSE WRPT – PBS in Duluth and Hamline University’s Center for Global Environmental Education, the film spotlights the accomplished night photography of Grand Portage photographer Travis Novitsky, and Carl Gawboy, Bois Forte, educator, artist and researcher of Ojibwe star stories.

Co-produced with Hamline University’s Center for Global Environmental Education, in this documentary, explore the movement to reduce light pollution through the creation of Dark Sky Places, with a focus on northern Minnesota.

Two free screenings of Northern Nights, Starry Skies will be held on November 22, 6:00 pm at Fitger’s Spirit of the North Theater and December 10, 7:30 p.m. at the Grand Portage National Monument. Participants should register ahead of time for these events.

In addition to airing at 7:00 p.m., November 25 on PBS North, the program will be aired at 8:00 p.m., December 5.

Light pollution at night is recognized as a growing problem that interferes with natural and human health. This documentary will inform watchers about the Dark Skies movement, and the recently designated Dark Sky places that northern Minnesota is uncommonly rich in and includes; Voyageurs National Park and the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.
