Keith Morris was in the Superior North Outdoor Center (the Bike Shop) on Tuesday, August 30, talking to owner Mark Spinler about a European bicycle trip he was soon to embark on.
When asked if he was traveling alone Morris replied no, he was going on a six-week bike adventure with five other locals, Leah Thomas, Virginia Danfelt, Tim Lederle, Maureen Hayes and Sue Abrahamson.
When asked where his group would be traveling Morris answered they would pedal through Czech Republic, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary and maybe Serbia, but at no predetermined pace and they would stop whenever they found something interesting to look at.
“We really don’t have an itinerary,” he said.
The group has dubbed themselves “The Prague Pedalers.” They have been busy these last few weeks getting their bikes boxed, tents and sleeping bags packed, and will fly to the Czech Republic on September 2 to begin a six-week cycling and camping adventure.
According to the Prague Pedalers blog, “Beginning in Prague, the group will bike primarily along a network of trails and quiet roads, visiting historic villages, medieval castles and monasteries, exquisite vineyards, and national parks and preserves in some of Europe’s most beautiful landscapes. Taking a left when they reach the Danube River, the team hopes to eventually end up in Budapest.”
And like Morris, Thomas quipped, our “day-to-day itinerary is virtually nonexistent.” The group will spend the first few days in Prague reassembling bicycles and seeing the sights, and a weekend at the Znojmo Wine Festival in Moravia. The celebration recalls the year 1327 when Czech King John of Luxembourg and his wife Elisabeth of Bohemia and the royal court arrived in Znojmo and peaks with the transfer of the city charter and punishment of rogue winemakers.
“After that?” wrote Thomas, “Who knows?”
