For 21 years, the Cook County Market has added a festive flavor to downtown Grand Marais on summer Saturday mornings. Both locals and visitors of all ages enjoy this outdoor Market—it’s a great place to meet friends new and old. In 2015, the readers of Lake Superior Magazine selected the Cook County Market as their number one favorite farmer’s market!
The Market is open from 9-1 on Saturday mornings, beginning Memorial Day weekend and running through mid-October, rain or shine.
Cook County Market is a membership based nonprofit with a focus on providing all local home produced foods, fresh produce, and quality handcrafted products. Jennifer Schulz, the Market’s president, said, “We’re looking forward to another great season! New this year we have fresh produce from Round River Farms (starting June 9), designer cupcakes from Pat-A-Cake, jewelry from Gitchi Gami Metals, and Thai massage by Two Birds.”
This is in addition to long-standing vendors with pottery, clay work, woodcraft and furniture, beading, books, local rocks and gems, chainsaw carving, weaving, knitting and sewing, granite work, and live music and CDs. What a line-up!
Visiting the Market is a lot of fun, and it also supports our local economy. The Market is located on private property owned by the Senior Center, and the Market’s rent supports the Senior Center’s budget. The Market also provides an opportunity for about 20 residents to generate taxable income. These are local producers who do not have the resources to afford storefront property. Some vendors use the Market as a start-up for further business ventures, and leave when their business grows enough to allow them to work in larger venues (in stores or on-line).
Others choose to stay because they enjoy selling at the Market on Saturdays.
