Planning is underway for the fourth annual Radio Waves Music Festival, sponsored by WTIP North Shore Community Radio and the North Shore Music Association. The event will again be held at Sweetheart’s Bluff Sledding Hill in the Grand Marais Rec Park and Campground. But for 2011, the festival has expanded to two days and will take place on Saturday, September 10 and Sunday, September 11.
“We started the Radio Waves Music Festival as a thank-you to the community as part of our ten-year anniversary celebration,” says WTIP’s Executive Director Deb Benedict. “There was such a tremendous response that it was important to us to keep it going.”
It was also important for WTIP to establish partnerships to help make the festival a community celebration. “Last year,” says Benedict, “the North Shore Music Association joined us, and will be doing so again. Also, we’re working with North House Folk School on the dates, so that their Unplugged event is part of ten days of music on the North Shore.”
WTIP and the North Shore Music Association have launched the “musician outreach phase” to determine the 2011 festival lineup. This year, all musicians interested in performing at the festival are invited to submit an interest form to WTIP by March 4. Those musicians that have never played at the Radio Waves Music Festival are also asked to submit a demo recording in CD format along with their interest form by the March 4 deadline.
“It’s really important to us to be inclusive and to build a line-up that explores the talent of the area,” says WTIP’s Music Director Cathy Quinn. “The interest form will help us identify who is interested in being a part of the festival, and will help us build a lineup from a more comprehensive list of performers.” Strong preference is given to Minnesota artists, and North Shore musicians are the most highly sought performers to fill the lineup at Radio Waves.
