Local mushers swept both at this past weekend’s Gunflint Mail Run sled dog races.

Wearing bib #19, Joanna Oberg of Run Silent Racing took first place in the 8-dog race and Matt Schmidt of Sawtooth Racing crossed the line first in the Gunflint Mail Run 12-dog sled dog race.

For Oberg, this was her third victory in four years, here. She placed second in the 2019 8-dog race and also placed second in the 2017 race as well. Otherwise, Oberg has been the first finisher across the line at the Gunflint Mail Run.

For Matt, he was third in the 12-dog race in 2018, 5th in 2020 and now first with a time of 7:52:33. Oberg’s team crossed the finish line in 6:11:58.

The Gunflint Mail Run has two races, a 12-dog, 100-mile race and an 8-dog, 65-mile race consisting of two legs of equal distance. Both races have a mandatory layover. (Note: 2022 Course was shortened due to trail conditions.)
