Three local mushers had good results at the CopperDog 150 sled dog race held in the Michigan Keweenaw Peninsula.

The Calumet, Michigan race was held over two days and run in three 50-mile stages to let the dog’s and mushers rest. The race ended on Sunday, March 5.

Rita Wehseler of Tofte took fourth with a time of 11:05:35. Joanna Oberg of Grand Marais wasn’t far behind Rita in fifth place with a time of 11:13:35. Hovland musher Mary Manning placed 10th, finishing in 12:06:09.

Joanna operates Run Silent Racing Kennel, Rita runs Stoney Creek Kennel, and Mary races out of her DoodleDog Kennel.

The first day was warm, said Oberg, who was in ninth place after the opening leg. The second day went better for Joanna who moved up to fifth place. She finished with six dogs and said she probably didn’t have enough training time to properly prepare her dogs for this race. Still, she was happy with her place and glad to conclude another season of racing.
