Three local junior tennis players, David Bergstrom, Lars Scannell and Pete Summers, participated in the Northern Open in Duluth, July 6 – 8. The Northern Open is a long-standing tournament that features some of the best players in Northern Minnesota and beyond.
All three boys are ranked in the Northern Section (which is comprised of Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota and Western Wisconsin) which resulted in all three being seeded players in their events. They lived up to their rankings as all three advanced to the semi-finals or finals in both singles and doubles.
In singles action, David Bergstrom lost a close match to Tommy Vang in the semi-finals of the Boys 18 and under.
Lars Scannell advanced to the finals in Boys 16 singles and under before succumbing to Charlie Adkins of Maple Grove, MN.
David and Lars teamed up in the Boys 18 and under doubles event, reaching the finals before losing to Charlie and Zack Adkins of Maple Grove, MN.
Pete Summers also advanced to the semi-finals in Boys 14 and under singles, where he dropped a close match to Elliot Schneider of Duluth. Pete and Elliot teamed up in doubles, taking home the Boys 14 and under doubles championship without the loss of a set.
All three boys are playing a full schedule of tournaments this summer, including the Fisherman’s Picnic tournament (August 2 -3) where all three are defending singles champions in their age groups.
