The Arrowhead Regional Arts Council recently approved grant applications totaling $80,860 to be awarded in Art Project grants; $23,260 in Rural and Community Art grants; and $55,515 in individual Artist Support grants. The funding for these grants is made available by the Minnesota Arts and Cultural Heritage fund as appropriated by the Minnesota State Legislature with money from the vote of the people of Minnesota on Nov. 4, 2008, and appropriations from the Minnesota State Legislature and The McKnight Foundation. Locally, Art Project Grants were awarded to:
• WTIP North Shore Community Radio
– Grand Marais ($5,805) — WTIP North Shore
Community Radio will use this grant to produce the two-day Radio Waves Music Festival in
Grand Marais which showcases regional musicians on Sept. 10 and 11.
• Grand Marais Arts, Inc. –
Grand Marais ($5,730) —
Grand Marais Arts, Inc. will use this
grant to present an Inuit printmaker from Cape Dorset, Canada, to teach classes at the Art
Colony and participate in the Inuit Premiere Exhibition in Grand Marais in March 2011.
• North Shore Music Association
– Grand Marais ($4,160) —
North Shore Music Association
will use this grant to present the Colorado-based bluegrass band Hit and Run
at the Lutsen
Resort on the weekend of Nov. 5-7.
• North Shore Music Association
– Grand Marais ($3,440) — North Shore Music Association
used this grant to present the Minnesota-based bluegrass band Monroe Crossing
at the
Arrowhead Center for the Arts in Grand Marais on July 10.
• Additionally, a Rural and Community Art grant was awarded to Cook County Higher
Education, Grand Marais ($2,600) to commission local sculptor Don Hammer to create a public sculpture that will also serve as a bike rack.
