The Cook County Curling Club hosted its fourth Two Person Champagne Open Bonspiel this past weekend with five out-of-town teams participating in a pool of 12 teams who played a round-robin format.
Taking first place in the A-event winners were the husband and wife team from Cook County Curling Club, Rory and Katy Smith.
Mark Harding and Amanda Donolovitch of the Kakabecka Falls Ontario rink placed second. Last year these two teams placed in the B event in the same order.
The B-event winners were a father/son-in-law team, Jim King and Curt Severson from the St. Paul Curling Club. Placing second was the local team of Bob Spry and Mike Christianson.
The C-event winners were Joanne Smith and Nancy Larson from Cook County Curling Club and taking second place was the husband and wife team Jeff and Sue Cadwell from the Bemidji Curling Club.
The goal for the Cook County Curling Club is that all skill levels are welcome to participate and have an enjoyable bonspiel experience. For a few participants, this was their first experience curling in a bonspiel. For Vera Schumann’s niece, Emily Saumer, this was her second time ever curling. All had a fun time. After all, curling in a bonspiel is not just about winning; it’s the social interaction that everyone really enjoys.
The Two-Person Open League is played Wednesday evenings starting at 6:30 p.m. If you are curious about curling, we offer free sessions for prospective members after league play is done at 7:30 p.m. on that evening. Plus, on Wednesday afternoon, starting at 1 p.m. you can come and try your hand at curling. All you need is a clean pair of shoes.
The club will host the Charles J. Futterer Open Memorial Bonspiel on March 6, 7, and 8. That bonspiel will be the last one the club will host for the 2019-2020 curling season. Please check out our website-cookcountycurlingclub.com for more information.
