Local churches, Thrivent give to food shelf

The Cook County Food Shelf will receive over $2,421 after a March 25 fundraiser.

Three local churches agreed to participate in partnership with Thrivent Financial for Lutherans by taking a special designated offering for the local food shelf at church services Sunday, March 25.

According to Gwen Lenz, the food shelf board secretary, these donated funds will be used to restock the food shelf offerings.

Lenz said thanks to Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Cornerstone Community Church, Lutsen Lutheran Church, and North Shore Chapter 31313 of Thrivent, $2,421 will go to that purpose.

The three churches contributed $1,921 from individual congregants’ offerings and Thrivent added a $500 match. This is a perfect example of the generosity of individuals in our communities taking care of fellow residents in less fortunate circumstances. According to Lenz, the food shelf board is

appreciative of the regular giving spirit of county residents.

“Thrivent Financial provides its members and other interested volunteers the opportunity to join in service and use the financial resources of Thrivent Financial to serve people and organizations here in our local area,” said Kaye Tavernier, assistant financial director of North Shore Chapter 31313 of Thrivent Financial. All Thrivent Financial members belong to a local organization—most often a chapter—that provides a way for them to give back to their communities, congregations and causes they care about through charitable activities, as well as connect with one another through social and educational events.

One such event will take place on Saturday, April 14. Thrivent members accompanied by non-member guests will participate in an evening of dinner, a short Thrivent educational workshop on Health Savings Accounts, and the musical production of Grease at William Kelley High School in Silver Bay.
