In the latest round of grants awarded by the Arrowhead Regional Arts Council (ARAC), Lin Elkins, Grand Marais, received a $1,000 Artist Access Grant. Elkins will use the funds to “support the creation of a series of hybridized wood and fiber containers intended to stimulate one’s senses.”
Marybeth Garmoe, Grand Marais, received a $3,375 Individual Artists Project Grant from ARAC. The grant “will provide resources to explore unique artistic broom handles through the use of various textures and materials. In addition, the brooms will be presented in a show titled “Tactile” to be featured at the Johnson Heritage Post Art Gallery in Grand Marais.”
Sam Zimmerman, Duluth, who has done a lot of projects in Cook County and Grand Portage, received $4,000 in the Individual Artist Project category.
The “funding will support the creation of Giiwedino-Manidoog/Spirits of the North, a new collection of work that will celebrate and provide resources for the larger community to learn about the Ojibwe star constellations and teachings. Works will be shown at the Johnson Heritage Post Art Gallery, Grand Marais for the 2023 Dark Skies Festival, November 2023-December 2023.”
Greg Mueller, Lutsen, and Matthew Baxley, Grand Marais, each received $8,000 in the Established Regional Artist category.
Mueller will use his grant award to create “a large scale public sculpture integrating re-claimed bike elements along the Gitchi Gami State Bike Trail.”
Matthew Baxley will use his funds to make “a short documentary film documenting how members of the LGBTQ2+ community are creating safe spaces in the outdoors and to inspire others to do the same.”
Rachel Klesser, Grand Marais, Jayne Richards, Grand Marais, and Donovan Duhmen, Grand Portage, received $2,500 NEA-ARP Working Artist Grants.
The ARAC mission “is to facilitate and encourage local arts development. This mission statement grows from a conviction that the arts improve the quality of life in the region.”
