Local Cook County artists and organizations were awarded grants from the Arrowhead Regional Arts Council on March 21, 2019.
Arts Learning Grant
Greg Mueller of Lutsen was awarded a $2,440 Arts Learning Grant to support the North Shore Community Pour, an interactive, learning experience in cast metal sculpture for 2019 Grand Marais Arts Festival attendees. Participants will create sand molds and watch as they are filled with molten aluminum which, when cooled will create a piece that they can take home.
Art Project Grant
North Shore Music Association of Grand Marais was awarded a $5,000 Community Art Project grant to support a series of events featuring Samite, a world-renowned flutist, singer, and kalimba, marimba, and litungu player. He will perform his one-man play “Resilience,” which combines Samite’s music, storytelling, film, and photo images on October 10. On October 11, Samite will talk and perform for middle school students studying global geography and history at Great Expectations School in Grand Marais.
That evening, he will offer a talk on the theme of healing through music at the Cook County Community Center or Sawtooth Mountain Clinic.
Rural and Community Art Project Grant
The Good Harbor Hill Players of Grand Marais were awarded a $5,000 Rural and Community Art Project grant to support the community development, planning, creation, and staging of the Summer Solstice Pageant in Grand Marais.
Artist Access
Joe Paulik of Grand Marais was awarded a $1,000 Artist Access grant to support the recording of 12 songs with producer Al Oikari.
Roxann Berglund of Grand Portage was awarded a $1,000 Artist Access grant to create a three-song demo of original compositions that will be used to gain feedback from other musicians and to promote the artist.
The Arrowhead Regional Arts Council is a regional nonprofit that has been encouraging local arts development in northeastern Minnesota through arts funding and services for over 35 years.
