Lloyd Bertel Berglund, 85, of Cannon Falls and formerly of Hovland, Grand Marais, and Stillwater, passed away Wednesday, April 11, 2018 at Three Links Reflections in Northfield surrounded by his family after a courageous journey with cancer.
Lloyd was born on September 4, 1932 in Hovland, the son of Swedish immigrants Gustav and Karin Berglund. He graduated from Cook County High School in Grand Marais in 1951. Following high school, Lloyd served in the U.S. Navy on the USS Des Moines during the Korean War. After his discharge from the Navy, Lloyd attended the Minneapolis School of Art for one year. On March 12, 1960, he was united in marriage to the love of his life, Marilyn Bystrom at the Zoar Lutheran Church in Tofte.
Lloyd and Marilyn raised their family in Grand Marais and were the owners of the Sea Wall Motel. He also worked at the U.S. Post Office and was a contractor for Tri State Homes. In 1985 they moved to Cannon Falls where they owned the Coast-to-Coast Hardware Store for six years, before moving to Stillwater, where they resided for the next 20 years. There he was a Realtor for Coldwell Banker and after retirement he worked in the paint department at Fleet Farm in Oakdale. He also worked as a painting contractor for over 50 years while working these various jobs. In 2012 they moved back to Cannon Falls where they currently reside.
Lloyd was an honorable man who was much loved by his family and friends. His greatest joy was his family and his eight grandchildren. “Seven boys and one girl.” Lloyd and Marilyn taught their children and grandchildren to have integrity, to be respectful, the meaning of a firm handshake, and among other things – not to wear your hat at the dinner table. He will be remembered fondly by everyone who was lucky enough to cross his path as a man with a quick-witted one liner, a fun-loving attitude, a Werther’s hard candy to hand out and as someone who added sunshine to their day. He was and always will be the captain of our ship, keeping us all on a straight course.
Lloyd’s family would like to thank the wonderful caregivers at the Cancer Clinic at Northfield Hospital, Bonnie “Blood” at MCHS, and the staff at Reflections Suites in Northfield for everything you have done for him.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Marilyn; children Tracy (Brian) Albertson of Stillwater, Troy Berglund of Stillwater, and Tricia (Michael) Meyers of Cannon Falls; grandchildren Darek (Megan) Albertson, Stephen Albertson, Cory Albertson, Jordan Berglund, Jacob Berglund, Mitchell (Kira) Meyers, Cody Meyers, and Leah Meyers. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Gunnar.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, April 21, at 2 p.m. There will be a visitation one hour prior. Services will be held at First English Lutheran Church, 511 W. Belle St., Cannon Falls, MN 55009. Pastor Phil Ruud will officiate. Lundberg Funeral Home, Cannon Falls is assisting the family. Online condolences are welcome at www.lundbergfuneral.com.
