“Living on the Edge” selected by the Phipps Center for the Arts for 2023 Show

“The North Shore Artists League has been juried into the Phipps in 2023!”, announced Kathy Fox Weinberg of Grand Marais and Chair of the League. The League responded Fall of 2021 to a call for artists issued by the Phipps Center for the Arts, located in Hudson, WI. The Phipps jury selected the North Shore Artists League to exhibit and is providing two galleries to the League to host a multi-media fine art show, Living on the Edge. The show will run May 12 – July 9, 2023. The Phipps selectively features the art of Western Wisconsin and Eastern Minnesota to their patrons primarily drawn from the 7-county metro area of Minneapolis-St. Paul.

“This is a great opportunity to showcase our talented North Shore artists and art community to a broad audience”, said Weinberg. Planning is well-underway with member Deb Birkeland named as Show Coordinator for the League. Our artists are already exploring the theme “living on the edge” and how to express this in their individual art endeavors . “On the edge of wilderness, on the edge of Lake Superior, on the edge of the USA-Canada border, on the edge of joy, on the edge of sanity (!) – our theme can go many directions,” states Weinberg. A “Call to Artists” will be issued soon with more details on how to participate in this show.

The North Shore Artists League, founded in 2019, is for artists, by artists, who are inspired by Lake Superior, her wilderness and her people. The League strives to provide a platform for artist-to-artist connections, sharing of creativity and inspiration, and engagement with the people of our communities with shows and business opportunities. The 80-member League has an active membership of 40 artists plus 40 affiliate artists as well as partner galleries and business members, from Duluth to the Canadian border. During Covid times, the League hosts its meetings streaming via Zoom. A unique feature and strength of the League is that member artists work in many different mediums including wood, leather, glass, ceramics, clay, metal, fiber, photography, paints, etc. and includes writers and musicians.

The next local opportunity for the community to engage with the work of the North Shore Artists League is the 3rd Annual North Shore Artist League Member Show, “Before the Light”, which opens April 9, 2022 (5-7 p.m.) at the Johnson Heritage Post Gallery and runs through April. Currently 37 artists will be participating.

More information about the League, show schedules and participation for artists is available to artists and the public at the League website at www.northshoreartistsleague.org.
