Lyle Wesley Saethre,
82, of Grand Marais died Friday, November 20, 2009 at the Cook County North Shore Hospital.
Lyle was born February 7, 1927 to Alfred and Mabel Saethre in Clearwater, Minnesota. He grew up and lived his entire life on Maple Hill in Grand Marais, Minnesota. He graduated in 1945 from Grand Marais High School. After graduation, Lyle joined the Merchant Marines, providing supplies for the military during WWII. He worked in the Arctic as an electrician building airports and other facilities on remote Barter Island and outside of Fairbanks.
He married Delores Rhea on December 30, 1948. They recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. Over the years Lyle was employed by Hedstrom Lumber Company, Arrowhead Electric, and as supervisor of electricians at Taconite Harbor and Silver Bay. He then founded Saethre Electric in Grand Marais, which he operated until his retirement. He later spent several years as an electrician at the Grand Canyon in Arizona.
Lyle was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Grand Marais.
Lyle enjoyed many activities including hunting, fishing, travel, helping friends, visiting with “round table” friends at the Blue Water Café, his artwork, and playing pranks on his relatives. He is well known in the community for his mural paintings on the Beaver House and other locations around Grand Marais.
He is preceded in death by his parents, infant daughter Jean Delores and his brother, Russell Lindskog.
Lyle is survived by his wife, Delores; children Lavona (Ed) Czaplicki of Schroeder, Dorothy Carlson and David (Karen) Saethre of Grand Marais, Kathy (Mark) Wallace of Woodbury, MN, Sharon (Patrick) Jorgenson of Fruitland, ID, and Robert (Mary) Saethre of San Diego, CA; brothers and sisters Roland Saethre, Olive Brugge, Eleanor Waha, Dale Saethre, Irene Thompson, Carolyn Engebretson, Chester Lindskog, Roy Lindskog and Lorraine MacDonald; grandchildren Richard (Jan) Marchand, Ann (Victor) Hanson, Jeremy Saethre, Amy (Brian) Valentine, Michael Jorgenson, Jordyn Saethre, Ben Jorgenson, Charlotte Saethre, Brian Wallace, Elizabeth Wallace, Nickoli Saethre.
A memorial service will be held at Bethlehem Lutheran Church on Dec. 13 at 2:00 p.m. A gathering for the family will start at 1:00 pm.
