Nancy Quinlan Oullis, 81, of Grand Marais died, peacefully surrounded by her family Friday, May 20, 2011 at the North Shore Care Center.
She was born January 10, 1930 to Jack and Dorothy (O’Malley) Quinlan in Itasca County, Minnesota. Nancy grew up in Hibbing where she graduated from high school. She attended Mills College in Oakland, California.
Nancy married George Oullis July 17, 1948 in Reno, Nevada. They lived in California until 1951, then moved to Duluth and then to Grand Marais.
She was an active volunteer who was devoted to community affairs and was a member of the hospital auxiliary. She enjoyed cooking, baking, skiing, and was very in touch with nature, but most of all she loved spending time with her family.
Nancy is preceded in death by her parents and sons Jack and Terry.
She is survived by her husband of 62 years, George of Grand Marais; daughter Susan (Philippe) Desrochers of New York; son Jeff (Sue) of Louisiana; grandchildren, Sebastian Desrochers, Austin and Jessica (Jared) Oullis, and Matthew and Riordan G. Oullis; great-grandchildren, Devon Oullis, Derek and Weston.
Memorials are preferred to the North Shore Care Center in appreciation for their wonderful care for our wife and mother.

Helen Elizabeth Strand Sundquist, 92, Grand Marais, died Thursday, May 19, 2011 in the Cook County North Shore Hospital.
She was born December 12, 1918 to Carl and Randi (Jacobson) Thoreson in Duluth. They moved to Hovland on the Steamship America. Helen grew up there and attended Flute Reed School. She graduated from Cook County High School in 1936 and married Clarence Strand November of 1943.
Helen was a caregiver through the years and later worked for the Cook County Nursing Home. After Clarence passed away Helen married Art Sundquist in 1982 and then retired from the nursing home.
She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Hovland, and its Ladies Aide and served as organist for many years. She enjoyed gardening flowers and vegetables and wintering in Texas.
She is preceded in death by her husbands, Clarence Strand and Art Sundquist; a daughter, Maribeth Doucette; a sister Irene Risch and a brother Edwin Thoreson.
Helen is survived by her son, Bruce (Pat) Strand; grandchildren, Joel (Crystal), Monique (Eric), Noel, Casey (Matt), Matthew, Jennifer, Brienne (Anton), Andrew, and Kristopher (Caitlin); greatgrandchildren, Chase, Brody, Jordan, Wyatt, Joshua, Maya, and Carter, Eero, and Hivar; and several extended family members.
