Clifford Curtis, 62, passed away September 14, 2010 at the University of Minnesota Fairview Hospital in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Cliff was born at St. Mary’s Hospital in Duluth on December 28, 1947 to Ashley and June (Seguin) Curtis. He was raised in Grand Marais and graduated from Cook County High School in 1965.

He met Ann M. Precord on a blind date to a football game during their senior year. They were married on June 25, 1966 in Carlton, MN and have two children, Theresa and Tony.

Cliff joined the United States Marine Corps in 1972 and served until 1980 as an Air Traffic Controller. He was stationed in several parts of the country as well as serving his country overseas.

He moved to Pierre, SD in 1982 to work for the FAA as a Flight Service Specialist at the Pierre Regional Airport. He was promoted to Flight Service Manager and worked there until its closing in 1997. He retired from federal employment at this time.

Cliff then was employed by the State of South Dakota as a Records Management Specialist. He was retired from state employment since June 2009.

Cliff was a member of the US Marine Corps League, American Legion, National Rifle Association, North American Hunting Club, and Streetmasters Car Club.

Cliff is survived by his wife, Ann; children Theresa (Mike) Nelson, Tony Curtis; grandchildren Brenna Nelson and Curtis Nelson; brothers James L. (Connie) and David (Darce); sisters Patricia (Kerry) and Colleen (Bruce); and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Cliff was preceded in death by his parents Ashley “Chum” and June Curtis, sister Anita Johnson, and brother-in-law James “Big Jim” Johnson.

Richard A. McKenzie, age 62, of Grand Marais (formerly Maple Grove) passed away on September 14, 2010.

Richard enjoyed a 34-year career with the Star Tribune, where he retired as operations director in 2006. He was currently serving as Cook County Veterans Service Officer. Richard valued his family above all else. He was an avid sportsman who loved his time spent in the great outdoors.

He will be deeply missed by his wife of 41 years, Debora; children, Mark (Tara), Kelly Johnson (Chad), Mike (Inta), Katie (Torey); grandchildren Molly, Joey, Daniel, Caleb;sisters Patricia Moore (Bob), Phyllis Wilson (Denny), Sue Hemphill (Brad); several nieces, nephews, and other family and friends.

Visitation and memorial service was held September 20 at Excelsior Covenant Church, Excelsior, MN. Private burial at Fort Snelling.

Robert D. Smith, 81, of Sunrise Hill Care Center in Traer, Iowa and formerly of Reinbeck, Iowa, died Sept. 16, 2010, at Covenant Medical Center, Waterloo, Iowa.

He was born Jan. 11, 1929, in Charles City, Iowa, son of Harry and Mary (Maehrlein) Smith. He married Norma Staack on June 10, 1951, in DeWitt, Iowa.

Bob graduated from Cedar Falls High School in 1946 and from Iowa State Teachers College in 1951. He served in the U.S. Army from 1952-1953 and was stationed in Germany. Bob was a general contractor and Realtor in the local area and farmed near Hudson until his retirement in the mid 1970s.

He enjoyed gardening, feeding and watching the birds and other wildlife, woodworking, and time spent with his family at their cabin in Minnesota.

Bob is survived by his wife; four children, Jackie (Scott) Garmager of Cedar Falls, David (Kellie) Smith of Hudson, Mary (Frank) Rickert of Waterloo, and Cindy (Mitch) Everson of Grand Marais; 11 grandchildren and three greatgrandsons.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother Harry; and sisterin law Gladys (Kiefer) Smith of Cedar Falls.

Bob donated his body to the University of Iowa Medical School. There will be no visitation. A celebration of life event will be held at a later date for the family.
