LaVerne Edith Hennessy,
age 80, passed away Saturday, August 14, 2010 at the Cook County North Shore Hospital in Grand Marais. She was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer on July 23, 2010. LaVerne was born in Littlefork, Minnesota on April 8, 1930 to Jonas and Sara Nelson of Meadowbrook township. After high school, LaVerne moved to Brainerd, Minnesota and worked as a cashier at the National Tea grocery store.

She was introduced to Vincent “Bud” Hennessy by his father. Theywere married on August 30, 1951 at Camp Rucker in Alabama where Bud was stationed in the Army. LaVerne and Bud lived in Aitkin, Morris and Duluth before settling into Grand Marais in 1962. LaVerne was known as an exceptional cook and baker in the community. She was an active member at St. John’s Catholic Church, a charter member of the Legion Auxiliary and worked at the IGA store for many years. LaVerne loved to read, play cards, listen to music, embroider, quilt, go to rummage sales and attend high school sports events with her friends Hazel Houglum and Dolly Johnson. She was honored as Cook County Booster Club Fan of the Year in 2005-06. LaVerne is survived by her husband of 58 years, Vincent “Bud” Hennessy and seven children: Michael (Joan) Hennessy of Plymouth, Minnesota, Patrick (Jennie) Hennessy of Grand Marais, John (Betsy) Hennessy of Bailey, Colorado, Cathy Hennessy of Mantorville, Minnesota, Tom (Karen) Hennessy of Kalama, Washington, Linda (Paul) Eid of Clear Lake, Minnesota and Sue Hennessy of Grand Marais. She is also survived by 16 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. LaVerne is preceded in death by her parents and nine siblings: Jonas, Bertha, Hazel, Albert, Enar, Bert, Alfreda, Peggy, and Albin; and two grandchildren. A funeral mass is scheduled for Saturday, August 21, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. followed by lunch and fellowship at St John’s Catholic Church in Grand Marais. Burial will be at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the North Shore Care Center Activity Fund or the American Cancer Society.

Gary R. Schaedler Jr.
passed away Thursday, August 5, 2010 at the age of 55.

He was born January 21, 1955 in Minneapolis, MN to Barbara and Gary Schaedler Sr.

Gary and his family moved to Grand Marais from the Twin Cities in November 2009 to what he referred to as “God’s country” to retire. He loved to start every day down by the bay, whether it was by “artist’s point” or at the “bench.” He also never tired of fishing, canoeing, or hiking, always planning some new trail, map, or campsite he could share with his son.

He was a third-generation Ironworker Local #512 and so very proud to be one. He was also a 1st lieutenant in the Civil Air Patrol (CAP) serving in St. Paul from 2004-2009 in search and rescue missions.

Gary was preceded in death by his grandfather Roland Schaedler; grandparents Arthur and Ethel LeMieux; stepmother Jean Schaedler; and his sister Pamela Smith.

Gary is survived by his wife Julie; their son Jacob, son Jason (Katy); parents Barbara (William) Goodwin and Gary Sr.; sisters Sherri (Bob) Abrahamson, Debbie Lanigan, Joni, and Anna; and many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
