Rosella “Rose” Viola
(Carstensen) Jacobson,
age 87, passed away on Friday, January 22, 2010, in Bemidji, MN at Havenwood Care Center.
A memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Monday, June 7, 2010 at Zion Lutheran Church in Albert Lea. Burial will be at Graceland Cemetery prior to the service.
Rose was born August 27, 1922 in rural St. James, Minnesota, the daughter of Thomas and Rosa (Rabe) Carstensen. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in St. James. As a child she lived in Godahl, St. James, and Madelia. Her schooling took place in St. James, through 11th grade. She married Ernest Kato Jacobson on July 16, 1941 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. They lived in various cities including St. James, Hill City, Grand Rapids, and Albert Lea. Rose was a support for Ernie in the various businesses that he started and profited in including restaurants, farming, Jacobson Paint and Decorating, and the founding of Jake’s Pizza, a pizza chain in Minnesota.
Rose was a homemaker extraordinaire. She kept her family well fed with her home-baked breads, cookies, kringla, and lefse. Her grandchildren looked forward to Grandma’s kringlas upon each visit! She also kept her children and grandchildren clothed in homemade pajamas and sweat suits. Rose’s Christian faith was evident throughout her life. The grace of God carried her through many of life’s storms. She was very active in the First Lutheran Church of Grand Rapids and Zion Lutheran Church of Albert Lea.
Rose is survived by her six children Ernie (Katrina) Jacobson of Grand Rapids, Larry (Connie) Jacobson of Bemidji, Mark (Sue) Jacobson of Bemidji, Paul (Sharon) of Bemidji, Nancy (Tim) Ramey of Grand Marais, Robert Jacobson of Wichita, KS; 16 grandchildren, John (Stephanie) Jacobson of Maple Grove, Scott (Linda) Jacobson of Annandale, Andrea (Rusty) Kuhl of Nebraska, Erika (John) Ahlbrecht of Bemidji, Karl (Erin) Jacobson of Bemidji, Nichole (Scott) Sinclair of Hastings, Sarah (Mike) McNamara of Hastings, Brian Jacobson of La Quinta, CA, Peter (Melanie) Ramey of Columbia, MO, Paul Ramey of Minneapolis, Jonathan Ramey, Kristen Ramey and Kara Ramey all of Grand Marais, Abigail Jacobson of Wichita, KS, Heather (Tom) Rudolph of Monticello, IL, Arja (Brad) Reiger of San Diego, CA; and 27 greatgrandchildren.
She is survived by her sister Violet (Carstensen) Anderson of Madelia and her brothers Harold Carstensen of San Antonio, TX and Norman (Kathleen) Carstensen of Marshall, MN.
Rose was preceded in death by her parents; husband Ernest; three sisters Helen, Irene, and Norma; three brothers Henry, “Butch” and Vernon (Sarge); three grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.

Roy Suttle Mark,
age 59, of Washington, DC, died May 21, 2010 in hospice.
Roy covered NASA, government IT policy, wireless products and FCC/broadband issues for e-Week, a technology industry newspaper.
Born in Houston, Texas, Roy began his journalism career in high school as editor of the school newspaper and a stringer for the city paper, The
Victoria Advocate.
He was an Eagle Scout.
He graduated in 1972 from the University of Texas, where he was sports editor, and then worked for the Austin American Statesman as sports editor and columnist. He was a sports columnist and feature writer for the Memphis, Tenn., Commercial Appeal,
where he covered the funeral of baseball great Dizzy Dean.
Later, Roy became the publisher of the West Lake Picayune
in Austin, Texas. He worked for the Texas Real Estate Commission, later publishing a real estate industry newsletter focusing on regulatory issues.
Roy was press secretary for Texas state Sen. Bill Patman.
Roy also taught computer skills and served as the Washington bureau chief for Internetnews.com. Roy was an avid baseball fan and the author of A.G. [Spalding] and
Johnny [Ward]: the Founding of
Baseball’s First Pro League.
Roy is survived by his parents, Jo Ann and Roy Mark of Victoria, Texas (long time summer residents of Grand Marais); a sister, Glynda Martin, of Pleasanton, Texas; and a brother, Boyd Mark, of Carlsbad, CA. A memorial wake was held 2 p.m., Sunday, May 30 at Angles Bar, 2339 18th St., Washington, DC.
Mabel Mary Mercer
(nee Cook) passed away peacefully May 14, 2010.
Mabel is preceded in death by sons Richard, Gerald, John Mercer, daughter Valerie McCormick (nee Mercer).
She is survived by daughters Brenda Chryn, Stacie (William) Schwender, Lisa Mercer, Allison Mercer.; sister Marjorie L.; brother George Cook; grandchildren Francis, Elizabeth, Rosalyn, Casey, Sophie, Frank, Sarah, Ron, Zachary, Tamela, Jessica, Christine, John, Paul, Breannan, Chase, Kashmir, Janine, Matt, Joseph, Maylynn, Mary, Carol and many great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends.
Mabel was born and raised in Grand Marais. She lived in Grand Marais as well as Minneapolis throughout her life until settling in Hinckley. Mabel was a band member of the Bad River tribe in
Northern Wisconsin. She loved “up
“Full Service Banking at north.” She learned to drive in her
Two Locations” later years. She will be sadly missed.

age 70, unexpectedly passed away March 31, 2010 in Ivins, Utah.
She was born May 23, 1939 in Litchfield, MN. to Rev. Elmer and Esther Johnson (Adolphson).
