90, of Grand Marais died Sunday April 25, 2010 at the North Shore Care Center in Grand Marais.

Memorial Service will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday, May 4, 2010 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Grand Marais. Arrangements by Cavallin Funeral Home. A complete obituary will appear in next week’s paper.

Martha Irene Quaife,
98, passed away on April 25, 2010 at the North Shore Care Center in Grand Marais, MN. Born April 24, 1912 in her family home in Grand Marais to Per and Hulda Wahlstrom, Martha graduated from Grand Marais High School and attended Duluth Teachers College.

Martha married Maurice Dale Quaife, continuing to live in Grand Marais, and devoted her life to raising and nurturing her family. Her strong will and dignity, which she retained throughout her challenging illness, were an inspiration to her family.

In her century of life Martha witnessed many changes in the community of Grand Marais, from the construction of the first road traversing the North Shore, and the arrival of the first automobile in town on the steamship America,
to participating in Skywatch following World War II and the development of the bustling community we see today. An exceptional baker, Martha thoroughly enjoyed cooking for family and friends. They looked forward to her banana cream pies, coffee bread and dinner rolls. Generations of children enjoyed her Halloween popcorn balls and cookies.

In later years Martha traveled from California to Florida and visited Canada, Europe, and South America. Flower gardening was a special hobby and she was a member of the Garden Club as well as a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. Martha is preceded in death by her parents; husband Maurice in 1985; brother Raymond; sisters Agnes Nyvold, Helen Dalbec and Ethel Hargrove; grandson Chris Hammer; and greatgrandson Alex Turnquist. Martha is survived by sons Stephen (Carole) of Grand Marais, Michael (Darlene) of Grand Marais, John (Judith) of St. Paul, and daughter Sara (David) Hammer of Duluth, and grandchildren Thomas, Robert, Laura, Marcy, Timothy, Peter and several great-grandchildren. A family internment service was held at the Maple Hill Cemetery in Grand Marais on April 25, 2010. A memorial service will be held in May. Martha’s family would like to thank the staff of the North Shore Care Center for their dedication and compassion to all the residents. Wesley S. “Bud” Smith,
83 of Grand Marais, died Monday April 26, 2010 at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Duluth.

Visitation was 5-8 p.m. Friday April 30, at Cavallin Funeral Home in Grand Marais. Visitation will continue from 10 a.m. until services at 11 a.m. Saturday May 1, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church. Burial will be in Chippewa City Cemetery.
