Donna Ann Linnell 73, of Grand Marais, died Wednesday, January 28, 2009 at the North Shore Hospital in Grand Marais, after a long, courageous battle with cancer.
She was born August 31, 1935 to Stanley and Grace (Rhea) Smith in Grand Marais. Donna grew up in Grand Marais and graduated from Cook County High School in 1953. She married Oswald Linnell on June 7, 1953 and raised her family in Grand Marais. Donna was an avid golfer and bowler, and enjoyed fishing, gardening, and reading books. She especially enjoyed traveling and spent her winters in Parker Dam, California.
Donna is preceded in death by her parents, husband, Oswald, brother, George "Bud" Smith, and sister-in-law, Marsha Smith.
She is survived by her children, Terry Skoog of Greer, South Carolina; Rick (Anne) of St. Clair, MN; Kevin (Kristi) of Becker, MN; Kim (Wendy) of Grand Marais; brothers, Russell (Nancy) Smith, Carl (Dianne) Smith, and Darrell Smith all of Grand Marais; sister, Robin (Steve) DuChien of Grand Marais; nine grandchildren, Jeremy, Josh, Kristopher, Jesse, Shaun, Kodi, Eric, Kelsey, and Kaitlynn; five great-grandchildren, Madison, Logan, Ashley, Alicia, and Nathan; and many nieces and nephews.
Memorial Service will be held at 1 PM on Saturday June 13, 2009 at Cavallin Funeral Home in Grand Marais.

Leonard Warren Jesperson, 69, of Nevis, MN died on Thursday, May 28, 2009 at his home.
Leonard was born on August 27, 1939 at Akeley, Minnesota the son of John G. and Tilda (Tollefson) Jesperson. He grew up and attended school at Akeley, MN where he graduated from high school in 1957.
He was united in marriage to Sharon Jean Case on December 10, 1960 at Minneapolis, MN.
They lived in Grand Marais for 39 years where he worked for the Qwest Telephone Company. He retired in April 1993. The past several years he has lived in Nevis, MN. He and Sharon spent 14 winters at Mission, Texas.
He was a member of the Lakeside Christian Church of Hubbard, MN.
Leonard enjoyed playing pool and had won champion at many tournaments. He also enjoyed puzzles, playing cards and being a handyman around the house. He was known for his exemplary work ethic, his attention to detail, and his ability to tell a story and a joke. And he will be remembered for his hospitality and his generosity.
He is survived by his wife Sharon J. Jesperson of Nevis, MN; his daughter Janet L. (Kal) Louks of Edgewood, New Mexico; his two sons Mark (Karin) Jesperson of Nevis, MN; Todd (Christine) Jesperson of Elk River, MN; his daughter-inlaw Jenny Jesperson; his sister Jennie Vos (Nick) of Arnolds Park, Iowa. His grandchildren Nick, Kasseopea, Dylan, Lucas, Katie, Matthew, Tyler, and Travis.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his son Jim Jesperson, and his brother John Jesperson.
Memorial Services were held on Tuesday, June 2, 2009 at the Cease Family Funeral Home Chapel in Park Rapids, MN. Officiant was Pastor Dick Jorgensen. Organist was Penal Jenson. Military Honors provided by the All Veterans Ceremonial Burial Team of the Park Rapids Area, military Taps by Raymond Vaadeland. Inurnment will be held at the Akeley City Cemetery. Dorothy Elaine Holm of Grand Marais, died peacefully, Friday, May 29, 2009 at the North Shore Hospital in Grand Marais.
She was born January 7, 1923 to Raleigh and Ruth (Berkhardt) Greenlee in Iron River, Wisconsin. She grew up on Lake Ruth near Iron River and graduated from Iron River High School. Dorothy married Edward Lehto and they moved to Grand Marais in 1950. She was remarried to Fred Holm in 1960. Dorothy worked as a housekeeper at the North Shore Hospital and was a homemaker through the years. She was a member of the Young Old Timers, the Cook County Ridge Riders, and Bethlehem Lutheran Church. Dorothy enjoyed growing flowers, feeding birds, chipmunks, dogs, and cats, cooking and baking, spending time with her family, and living up at Devil Track Lake.
Dorothy is preceded in death by her parents, husband, Fred Holm in 2002, children – Lee Allen and Robin Lehto, and baby boy Holm; sisters – Gladys and Ruth; and brother – Harry.
She is survived by her children, Polly (Gary) Nelson; Donald Lehto; Cindy (Greg) Montgomery; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation and Funeral Service was held Wednesday, June 3, 2009 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church. Burial will be in Poplar Grove Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials preferred to the North Shore Care Center. Arrangements by Cavallin Funeral Home.
Elmer Eugene Harvey, 86, passed away May 28, 2009.
He was born August 16, 1922 in Wichita, KS to Gail Bailey and Joseph Benton Harvey. Elmer graduated from Friends University in 1945. He graduated from the University of Kansas Law School in 1948.
Elmer moved to Minnesota in 1948 where he worked for Mutual Service Insurance. He was active in and held various officesin local co-ops, local government, and local, district and state DFL.
In 1965 he moved to the North Shore where he owned and operated Solbakken Resort at Lutsen and practiced law in Grand Marais. He also served as probate judge and examiner of titles. He later moved to Duluth in 1993.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Alice; children, Ruth Harvey, Sylvia Dorsey, Edith Carlson and Joseph Harvey; grandchildren, Jason Dorsey, Suzanna Roettger, Rebekah Lint, Rosalie Carlson and Anna Carlson; great-grandchildren, Jason, Jerell, Jazzy and Jhabazz Dorsey.
Memorial gifts to Legal Defense Fund of NAACP, American Friends Service committee or the Mesaba Park Building Fund in Hibbing.
A memorial service will be held Sunday June 28 at 11a.m. at the Duluth-Superior Friends Meetinghouse, 18th Ave. E. and First St., Duluth, MN.

Catherine J. Bottino, 92, of Wilmington, Ill., passed away April 24, 2009 at her home.
She was born Oct. 18, 1916 in Lake Bluff, Ill., the daughter of John and Alida Jongsma. She taught home economics and art at Warren Township High School in Gurnee and Lockport Township High School.
For numerous summers Catherine lived in Grand Marais and worked as a designer for a gift and floral shop.
She was a member of St. Rose Catholic Church in Wilmington, where she was involved with the C.C.W., the North Shore Weavers, Fine Line Creative Art Center, charter member of the Will County Home Economics Association, member of the Joliet Weavers Guild, Marli Fine Line Creative Art Center, trustee of the Lambert Fund and member of the Wilmington Garden Club. Catherine was also a graduate of I.I.T. and Chicago Institute of Design.
She is survived by her daughter Ilsa Krone; three grandchildren, Sarah, Harold Jr. and Toni VanDuyne; two great-grandchildren, Haley and Aiden; and numerous friends.
Catherine was preceded in death by her parents and husband Louis.
Visitation and services were held April 28 and 29 in Wilmington, followed by burial in Mount Olivet Cemetery.
