Edwin Otto Joesting, 91, of Grand Marais, died quietly in his sleep at the North Shore Care Center on May 1, 2009. He was preceded in death by his treasured wife, Maud, in 2005.
Ed was the youngest of seven children born to Frederick Henry John Joesting and Katharine Wilhelmina Decker Joesting. He spent his youth in Owatoma, Minn., and then attended the University of Minnesota, where he earned a degree in chemical engineering.
As World War II was escalating, Ed was about to join the U.S. Navy, but the government intervened and classified his work developing synthetic rubber as essential to the war effort. Although Ed could not join the Navy, he remained on 24 alert for call-up throughout the war.
Most of Ed’s professional life was at 3M in St. Paul, where he enjoyed a successful and stimulating career in both research and management. Among his accomplishments are the concept and development of filament tape and a break-through method for producing transparent Scotch Tape to replace amber-colored cellophane tape. Ed was also president of Tech Forum.
In 1976 Ed and Maud moved to Grand Marais. Here they built a home, became active in Bethlehem Lutheran Church and civic projects. They also enjoyed canoeing, fishing, skiing, hunting moose and as much time as possible at their island on Saganaga Lake. They were also intrepid and humble world travelers.
Ed was known as the consummate gentleman. He was also known as a respectful man, a thoughtful man, and a man of his word.
Ed is survived by daughters Joan (Martin) Gram of St. Louis Park, Minn., Susan (Michael) Propst of Corvallis, Ore., Lynn (Bill) Day of Bellingham, Wash., and son Edwin (Patricia) Joesting of Forest Lake, Minn.; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
His friends and family will remember Ed Joesting with love and respect.

Deborah Jean Orris, born December 29, 1959, died May 16, 2009.
Deb was a musician and a nurturer of living things. The flowers she planted, the gardens she created along with her husband, Ron, are just starting to grow and bloom. They are her legacy and her continuing presence in our lives.
Deb was a cellist of uncommon ability. That someone with her talent would end up in our small community was a gift never taken for granted by anyone who had the good fortune to play with her. She made us all sound better.
She kept us in tune. What will we do without her?
No service is planned at this time but any kindness extended, any small life tended, any seed planted, any lovely sound offered is fitting memorial to Deb Orris.
