In Parent Pitch action the Wildfire sit on top of the standings at 2-0 after victories over the Lions and the Lumberjacks 24-21 and 30-17.
Grant Oberg, Lauren Berglund, and Aulis Nelson anchor the team with their hitting and fielding complemented by Nico Tersteeg’s speed on the base paths, which makes them a tough team to beat.
The Lions (1-2) feature playmakers Andrew MacGillivray, Ayden DeRosier, and Trinity and Asher Henneman.
The Lumberjacks (1-2), with home run hitters Talon DeBoer and Sidney Litterst leading their team, split their two games with the Lions 21-19 and 9-15.
In Little League action the Cubs lead the local league at 3-1.
Led by the pitching and hitting of Weston Heeren, Cy Oberholzer, and Amos Falter, the Cubs managed an extra-inning victory over the Dodgers 7-6 on June 12 to start the season. They followed that by beating the Twins 11-3 the following week. They also pulled off a 7-4 victory in the front half of a doubleheader in Silver Bay on June 26 in which Cy hit his first career grand slam. The Cubs dropped the second half 15-5.
The Dodgers (1-3) are led by pitcher/catcher combo of Jake and Katie Carpenter, first baseman/ pitcher Hunter Gomez, and Ray Dresley who combined to beat the Twins 14-4 on July 26. They lost their June 19 doubleheader in Silver Bay 3-4 and 3-13.
The Twins (0-4) are led by Ryan Smith, Recko Skildum, and Andrew Halberg. After dropping their June 12 doubleheader to Silver Bay (8-4 and 15-1), the squad has been practicing hard and progressing quickly and will make the second half of the season very interesting.
This year Cook County has also taken a traveling team of our All- Stars (the names listed above plus Cole Anderson and Derek Smith) to out-of-town tournaments in Virginia and Proctor. The skill level is very high in these games, but the Cook County Vikings’ squad finally managed their first victory 15-7 over Red Lake on June 24 before dropping the consolation championship 13-7 to Grand Rapids. They play one more tournament in Superior the weekend of July 27.
