July is the beginning of a “new year” for the Grand Marais Lions and Lioness clubs. New officers are installed and assume leadership positions which help guide club activities, fundraisers and special events.
Lions Club officers for 2009-10 are Max Bichel, president; Andy Brostrom, 1st vice president; Doug Anderson, 2nd vice president; Andrew Smith, 3rd vice president; Ken Wielinski, secretary; Bob Spry, treasurer; Bob Pratt, Lion tamer; Gene Erickson, tail twister; Terry Backlund, 2-year board; Al Taenzer, 2-year board; Myron Bursheim, 1-year board; Bill Hennessy, 1-year board.
Lioness Club officers for 2009-10 are Sandra Hyne, president; Katie Anderson, 1st vice president; Judy Siegle, 2nd vice president; Nancy Waver, secretary; Lucie Detrick, treasurer; Ingo Nelson, tail tweaker; Tina Ingram, 3-year board; Bev Denyes, 2-year board; Vi Wonser, 1-year board; Mary Sanders, past president.
The Lions Club, founded in 1951, and the Lioness Club, founded in 1978, have served this community since their inception. The main source of funds donated to the community comes from the Lions Fisherman’s Picnic and the Lioness dinner buffet and silent auction. The Lioness buffet is the kick-off event of Fisherman’s Picnic and will be held Wednesday July 29. Fisherman’s Picnic, Jul. 30 – 31 and Aug. 1 – 2 will be a weekend of fun-filled events for people of all ages.
