On June 9, 2009, the Grand Marais Lions and Lioness Clubs celebrated “Charter Night,” a time-honored event at which they pay tribute to the club’s founding members, as well as mark their years of dedicated service to this community.

The Lions Club has been in existence since 1951, and the Lioness Club since 1978. This is a night of celebration before the long hours of planning and organizing this years Fisherman’s Picnic.

The first Grand Marais Fisherman’s Picnic was held in 1929. It has grown into what is today a festival of fun-filled days with activities for people of all ages. ThePicnic this year begins on Wednesday, July 29, with the Annual Lioness Buffet Dinner and Silent Auction; it ends on August 2, Sunday, with a parade down the main streets of Grand Marais. People come from all over the United States and Canada to participate in the games and daily competitions. Theycome for bicycle races, fish throwing contests, tent bingo, sidewalk sales, kiddy rides, game prizes, class reunions, music, food, dancing, and so much more.

McElevey received this award for her dedication and service to the Lioness Club and its mission. For the past eight years, Mary has organized the Fisherman’s Picnic Lioness Buffet Dinner, the main source of fundraising for the Lioness Club. All money raised is returned to our community through non-profit support, academic and leadership awards, and other school and community projects. Congratulations, Lioness Mary McElevey!

The Lioness Buffet and Silent Auction allow the Lioness Club to help fund local nonprofit organizations and Cook County High School scholarships.

The Lions sell raffle tickets to help secure the funds they need to support the causes that are near and dear to the heart of the Lion. They include the Boy Scouts, CCHS scholarships, local community requests, eye sight care exams, sight canines, diabetes research, CCHS band and many more.

Club membership is open to our community. Becoming a Lion or Lioness gives you an opportunity to contribute to your community and support worthwhile causes. Please call (218) 387-2832 for more information.
