No, we don’t mean that to say we are all operating without complete sanity. It means that for the past three years, the Grand Marais Lioness organization has been selling fine Georgia pecans at prices competitive to the market.

We are doing this as a fundraiser to increase our charitable giving capacities. During our first attempt, we sold mainly to our own membership in order to determine the best methods and supply level. By our third year we were attempting to broaden our sales season and to reach more venues in the community.

We recently made the commitment to sell the pecans again this year. Our sales this past season have made us $1,200 in profits. That is $1,200 more to increase our donation power. We think that is pretty darned good. Along with the silent auction and the famous buffet at Fisherman’s Picnic, the pecan sales will continue to be our major fundraisers.

Thank yous go to Lioness Jean Bushman for the original idea and the leadership in finding a good company in Georgia. (One of our sales pitches is that these nuts are brought to Grand Marais by dog sled, but I don’t think many people believed that one.) Thanks also to Sherri Bichel, who has headed the fundraising committee, responded to individual requests for our product, and provided cold storage for the pecans at her home. We still have some in her freezer, so if you happen to need pecans for a special recipe, give her a call at the Macarthur House at 387-1840. She will be sure to give you a great deal.

In the meantime, please remember us for our next round of sales in late fall and early winter. The nuttier we become, the more we can help the community!
