The Grand Marais Lioness Club has awarded $1,000 in support for teacher-inspired programs during the current school year. This grant was initiated by President Sandra Hyne, after reviewing the major concerns of the Lioness group in determining their support. Lioness want to commit their major efforts to support youth and youth activities.
Each year, the Lioness Club looks at its budget and determines the amount of money they can assign to open-ended grants. This year the amount was $1,000, and forms were distributed to all teachers in the ISD 166 school system to urge response for funds for their projects by November 30. The Lionesses intend to look at broadening their requests to the charter schools in the future. For now, it was rewarding to the Lionesses and to ISD 166 to determine that the awards would be the following:
» $100 to Dena Schliep and
her kindergarten classes who judged that they would like a number of learning games and activities to augment learning at the kindergarten
level. Theclass helped choose
the activities.
» $200 to Pam Taylor and
Dorie Carlson for support in the many enrichment programs that exist in the school program for middle students. The range is truly amazing and includes such activities as the Geography
Bee, History Day, and Winter
Exploratory Day.
» $300 for Eli Hill’s Robotics
Competition students. This group is like the Future Cities competition in looking at the future and helping to envision what that means for its current student population. This year’s competition depends upon contributions from the community, and they hope
to do well. Students helped
write the grant proposal.
» $400 for the band program to
ensure that students have the sheet music and the instruments to perform if they have the desire. Bill Tormondsen and Kerri Bilben are continuing to be the inspired mentors.
“If we had a million dollars, we would gladly use it to support all these and more wonderful programs,” It was obvious from information in the applications that our teachers are hardworking and dedicated to making education challenging and engaging. In supporting those efforts, we thank all those within the community who have given us the means to achieve that mission.”
