As a way to further their mission to the youth in this area, the Grand Marais Lioness have made it an annual event to encourage teachers in ISD 166 to submit grant applications for funding all or part of the many projects that are unable to be paid for by district dollars.
This year, the Lioness Club awarded a total of $1,750 to teachers from kindergarten through high school. It was a monumental task to decide how to spend those relatively few dollars when we received almost $7,000 in requests, each one worthy of being awarded. In the end, the committee decided to give some money to most of the requests. We further encouraged those teachers to come back to us for more assistance if they needed it, and we would see what our budget could accommodate.
We thought the community would like to see how much imagination and hard work goes into teaching these days by telling you about the awards:
. Dena Schliep, kindergarten, for learning tools and games to teach important concepts.
. Dorie Carlson and April
Wahlstrom for the expansion of History Day and
Knowledge Bowl.
. Ann Hegg for a penny rug project for her first graders.
. Ivy Church to support the continuation of the Senior
Show this spring.
. K.B. O’Neill for the Healthy
Habits Summer Program for elementary students.
. Bruce Johnson for a cardmaking business project for
Special Education students.
• Michael McHugh for updating communication technology used by his students in Youth Radio and other projects.
. Teachers Gellner, Viren,
Russ, Larson and Dorr for an ambitious cross-curricular technology and mentoring project between middle school students and high school seniors.
It is a gift to our committee to learn about such imaginative and well-thought-out projects and we hope that the community continues to learn more about the results of these projects by reading about them on a continuing basis in our paper. Thank you from the Lioness to all the teachers in our district.
