The lineup for WTIP’s ninth annual Radio Waves Music Festival has been announced.
The family-friendly festival, held at Sweetheart’s Bluff in the Grand Marais Recreation Area and Campground Sept. 9-11, will feature three days of live music in a tented outdoor venue from a diverse mix of local and regional artists and bands.
Festival goers can look forward to several new bands at this year’s event, plus many returning favorites. The weekend will feature over 20 local acts, as well as five regional acts, including Dusty Heart, the Yellow-Bellied Sapsuckers, Bowers & Gillman, Sam Miltich and the Clearwater Hot Club, and Rich Mattson and the Northstars.
Music starts Friday at 4 p.m., with the following acts set to perform throughout the evening: the North Shore Community Swing Band, Frozen Britches, Plucked Up String Band, Mark Zierath, Earth Wind and Todd, Dusty Heart, and Shoot from the Hipsters.
Saturday the first act takes the stage at 10 a.m., and the last at 8 p.m. Attendees can look forward to performances by the Sky Blue Trio, the Curry Family Band, Briand & Friends, Portage, Shaky Ground, Andy Keith & Friends, the Fish Heads, Scotty’s Coast Connection Band, the Yellow- Bellied Sapsuckers, Rich Mattson and the Northstars, Sam Miltich and the Clearwater Hot Club, and Cook County’s Most Wanted.
An hour of gospel music starting at 10 a.m., with Gordon Thorne and friends, kicks off Sunday’s schedule. Other musicians performing throughout the day include the Dlutkowskis, Jim & Michele Miller, Dat Dere Jazz, Bowers & Gillman, Heck Yeah Holler String Band, Michael Monroe, Oversize Load, Lake Effect, and Angel Hair Rasta. The last act is set to take the stage at 6 p.m.
The Radio Waves Music Festival is a favorite for visitors, area residents and performing musicians. It’s held rain or shine (with two stages housed under a large tent) and includes on-site food, children’s activities and on-site camping. Admission is $10 per day or $20 for the weekend, and free to children 12 and under.
Radio Waves is made possible in part with funding from the Minnesota Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund, and is supported by a grant from the Grand Marais Area Tourism Association. Proceeds from the event will help support WTIP’s capital projects.
