Shirley Lindgren is going to have to start following the Montreal Canadiens now that her grandson Charlie Lindgren decided to forgo his senior year of eligibility at St. Cloud State and signed a two-year contract to play goal tender for the NHL team.
A long-time resident of Lutsen, Shirley has been a big supporter of Charlie and his two hockey playing brothers, following them as they played in college or in post high-school leagues where athletes gain more game experience before entering college.
At 6’ 2” and 190 pounds, Lindgren, age 22, played in 88 regular season games for St. Cloud State over three seasons and was one of the top collegiate goaltenders this season.
This past year Lindgren played in 40 games and posted a record of 30-9-1 with a .925 save percentage and 2.13 goals against average. He was the top goaltender in the NCHC conference in wins with 30, and saves, where he recorded 1,020 stops. Charlie was also tied with two other conference goaltenders with five shutouts.
As a free agent more than a dozen teams pursued Lindgren, but he said he selected Montreal because he felt he would fit best with the organization.
