Visit the Grand Marais Public Library for two special programs scheduled next month.
On June 10, CLIMB Theater will present Stubby the Elephant at 1 p.m. The presentation is adapted from Rudyard Kipling’s The Elephant Child and created especially for children ages 3-8. Participants will be part of the interactive play and an activity session that follows. The program is designed to build literacy and reading readiness skills.
On June 13, a historical and modern program about radio, Internet broadcasting and the art of storytelling will be presented at 6 p.m.
Travel through time as the Icebox Radio Theater starts their program with a 1930s and ’40s-style drama from the golden age of radio. From the music to the sound effects, learn how radio dramas were produced while enjoying a segment from Sergeant Luxo & his Fateful Husky, Prince. Listen as Sergeant Luxo and Prince apprehend the dastardly bandit Red Jones!
Then learn about the opportunities available in the modern world of Internet-based audio programming. Performances will be streamed live over the Internet at libraries with wireless services or recorded as podcasts to be posted later. Learn about Internet radio, podcasts and how you can record your own programs to share online.
And if watching and listening isn’t enough, audience members can become cast and crew in the creation of another segment of the Sergeant Luxo series. Or if you prefer to wait until the program is “off the air” time will be available to experiment with sound effects equipment and microphones.
These events are sponsored by the Grand Marais Public Library, the Arrowhead Library System and funded by money from Minnesota’s Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.
