Every year Library Friends is gratified by the generosity of the community that supplies us with used books for our annual used book sale, our major fundraiser. It is always with a sense of anticipation that we open the bags and boxes that we’ve received.

The Friends work hard to be good stewards of your donated books by sorting them into various categories and carefully packing them away, awaiting their appearance at the big sale during Fisherman’s Picnic. This year, we’ve also had a couple of smaller sales. The books from Antarctica sold at the Grand Marais Library and the art-related books sold during the Arts Festival at the Johnson Heritage Post.

This year also saw Library Friends turn to the Internet to find buyers for some of the more valuable books and those books that appeal to a special niche of readers or collectors. We want to maximize the proceeds from your donated books.

You can rest assured that we make every effort to be environmental stewards as well. Unfortunately, there are always books that cannot be put into the sale because of their poor condition. To keep these items out of the garbage stream, we transport them to the Recycle Center in Two Harbors, where a special workforce removes the hard covers and recycles the paper.

Despite our Internet sales and the two special sales, we still have a large collection of interesting and fine condition books that promises something for everyone. Of special interest this year are books for the classic car enthusiast, the sailor, and the history buff. We have a collection of JFK material to mark the 50th year since his election as president. You, too, can experience that sense of anticipation as you peruse over 60 tables of books. You never know what you might find!

The members only sale will begin the event from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 5 at the Community Center, located at 317 W. 5th St. in Grand Marais, with memberships on sale starting at 4 p.m. The sale to the general public will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 6. New this year is the Early Bird Bag Sale, with a new start time of 7 a.m., continuing to 10 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 7. Come early and get a bag of books for only $3.
