Legion baseball is in full swing



The Cook County/Silver Bay Vikings Legion baseball team has been playing quite a few games lately, with some wins and losses, but always playing for the love of the game.

On Thursday, June 17, the Senior Legion team faced Taconite at home. Taconite took the contest 7-4.

After a scoreless first inning, Taconite put two runs on the scoreboard in the second and one more in the third to take a 3-0 lead. The Vikings held Taconite scoreless in the fourth and tied the score three all. Taconite edged out to a one-run lead in the fifth, and after each team was scoreless in the sixth, the team for Aurora, Minnesota, pushed three runs across the plate while the Vikings only managed one.

Patrick Pierre took the loss for the Vikings. Patrick pitched six innings, giving up four runs on six hits and striking out three.

Jake Stadler was three for three at the plate with three RBIs. Tate Crawford had a hit, as did Tucker Cook.

The Vikings committed five errors to one for Taconite.

Junior Legion takes a 4-3 win over Taconite

Each team scored two runs in the first, and the Vikings scored two in the third while Taconite posted one run. Otherwise, there wasn’t a lot of offense. The Vikings struck out nine times while Taconite players fanned five times.

Once again, Jake Stadler led the team with his bat by going two for three. Amos Falter, Paul Dorr, Hunter Gomez, and Ray Dressley each had one hit apiece.

Jacob Carpenter took the win. He pitched 2.2 innings, allowing four hits and three runs while striking out two and walking three. Jake Stadler relieved, throwing 3.2 innings, giving up three hits but no runs. Braylon Hoff finished on the mound with two-third of an inning, allowing no hits or runs.

Vikings crush Barnum

Barnum pitchers gave up 17 walks to the Vikings in a 21-4 route in a game played at home on June 19.

Paul Dorr took the win. Paul pitched 2.2 innings allowing two hits, four runs, and walking four with one strikeout. Braylon Hoff relieved Paul, pitching 2.1 innings. He allowed two hits, no runs, and struck out five.

The Vikings scored five in the first and ten runs in the third to take an insurmountable lead. The contest was called after five innings because of the tenrun rule.

Ero Wallin was two for three with three RBIs. Amos Falter was also two for three with one RBI. The other Vikings who each got one hit were Tate Crawford, Kole Anderson, and Patrick Pierre.

Each team made four errors in the field.

Vikings fall in extra innings

The Vikings took a 4-0 lead in the first and led 6-1 through the second, but the Ely Timberwolves kept nipping at their heels, scoring eight runs in the third to go up 9-7.

The Timberwolves scored one more in the fourth. Then, after being held scoreless in the fifth, the Vikings bats came alive in the sixth and tied the game at 10-10.

Neither team scored in the seventh, but both squads tacked on one run in the eighth. The Timberwolves made the winning run in the ninth to end an exciting game.

Leading the team at the plate was Lucas Stadler, who was four for five with three RBIs. Ero Wallin was two for three with one RBI; Tate Crawford and Derrick Seidel were each two for five, and Jaco Dorr, Patrick Pierre and Jake Stadler each had one hit in the game.

Ero Wallin started on the mound, throwing 4.2 innings. Ero gave up ten hits and ten runs while walking one and striking out three. Jake Stadler pitched 3. Inning. He allowed four hits, one run, struck out one and walked one. Paul Dorr finished the game. He allowed three hits, one run and was credited with the loss.

The Vikings committed six errors to two for the Timberwolves. Ely ended with 17 hits, three each from J. Bianco, D. Scheffler, and C. Sandberg.

Vikings take a win over Minnetonka

Playing at home on Sunday, June 20, the Vikings faced a Senior Legion team from Minnetonka, taking an 11-0 win.

Jacob Carpenter only allowed three hits, striking out five and not giving up a walk over the five-inning game called because of the ten-run rule.

The Vikings took a 7-0 lead after one and put four more runs on the board in the fourth.

Derrick Seidel and J. Stadler each collected two RBIs, and each was one for three at the plate. Patrick Pierre was two for three with one RBI, and Tate Crawford, Amos Falter, and Ryan Bilben each had one hit in the game.

Minnetonka finished with five errors, while the Vikings finished with two.

Vikings fall to Kenyon

Playing the second game of the day, the CC/SB Vikings lost to Kenyon 5-3 on Sunday, June 20.

Tate Crawford was two for two to lead Viking hitters. In addition, Tate drove in one run. Paul Dorr, and Ryan Bilben, had the other two hits for the Vikings.

Kenyon jumped to a 2-0 lead after the first inning, and each team scored three in the second to end the scoring.

Jacob Dorr took the loss. Jacob allowed three hits and five runs in two innings. He walked two and struck out one.

Kenyon batters only managed three hits and two walks in the contest. The Vikings ended with four errors to one for the team from Kenyon, Minnesota.
