Legion Baseball drops two, gains confidence

Our North Shore Vikings traveled to Marble, MN, on the Iron Range on June 25 to take on last year’s state tournament entry in a doubleheader, delivered competitiveness, but came away on the short end of a sweep.

In game one, Colin Everson, batting in the second spot, got us off to a good start with a solid single and promptly stole second. Daniel Wilson then drove him in with a double deep into the right-center gap.

Marble came back with three off starter Joe Borud. An error at first, handling a tough throw, contributed as well as an error in left on a hard hit line drive.

Neither team could score again until Marble added two in the fourth on two singles and a hit batsman. The Vikings put runners on base in the third and the fourth but couldn’t get them in.

Marble’s bats came alive in the fifth and put the game away with six runs on three hits, an error, a walk, and a hit batsman. The final was 11-1.

The second game began with Daniel Wilson taking the hill. A walk and a hit yielded one run for Marble, but the North Shore boys came back with two of their own with a walk to Richie Furlong, a double by Colin Everson, and a double by Daniel Wilson.

Marble tied the score in the second and took the lead with one more in the third. The Vikings tied the game when Joe Borud drove in Richie Furlong.

The fourth came and went without any scoring, but Marble scored four times in the fifth, utilizing a walk and three consecutive hits, and added another in the sixth and three in the seventh with three walks, two hits, and an error.

With the bases loaded, Colton Furlong, batting for Daniel Wilson, drove in a fourth run for the Vikings. The final score was 11-4.

Again, however, five of our starters were young players ready to enter the ninth grade this fall. The team came home feeling even more confidence in their abilities.
