On Veterans Day, the American Legion Post 413 Auxiliary wrapped up its winter clothing drive. The auxiliary delivered several large boxes full of warm clothing, quilts, winter boots, travel-sized toiletries and more to Help-A-Vet, a Minneapolis group formed to deal with the growing number of homeless veterans in the Twin Cities.
The clothing drive was initiated by Auxiliary member Nancy Backlund, who learned that the shelter system in the Twin Cities frequently doesn’t have enough beds for the homeless. The Auxiliary learned that many veterans end up sleeping outside, no matter how cold the weather and they wanted to do something to help.
Auxiliary members were delighted with the response from the community, which included an amazing contribution of 55 pairs of hand-knitted socks from Donna Wilson of Grand Marais. Her sister, Sherrie Lindskog also donated several cozy handmade afghans. All of these items were happily accepted by Help-A-Vet.
