North Shore Health Care Foundation was very fortunate in 2007 to have six wonderful people join the board of directors. Today, nine years later, four of them are leaving. John Bottger, board president, Jayne Johnson, board secretary, Fran Smith, and Kathy Hellner have all reached the term limit set in statute, and will be sorely missed at foundation meetings.

John Bottger has been leading the board since 2012, and has served on many different committees guiding the organization through a period of rapid growth. Annual grants in support of Cook County Health Care have grown from $31,414 in 2012 to $90,460 this year. Care Partners of Cook County was nurtured and grown until it became a separate organization in July of this year. The Oral Health Task Force was started in 2011 and has had a significant impact on the children of the county in four years of operations.

Jayne Johnson is one of the leaders in the development of Care Partners, and will serve as the board president of the new entity. She earned her Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota during her term on the board.

Fran Smith has been the chair of the Gunflint Lodge BBQ that is held each June in support of the endowment fund. If the Gunflint Trail has a social season, this event was an early addition to it and is not to be missed. During her tenure, the BBQ added $21,215 to the endowment fund, which will result in annual income to the foundation in perpetuity.

Kathy Hellner has been the producer of the foundation newsletter as long as anyone can remember, and she will continue to do that on a contract basis through her new company, Two Dogs in the Web.

Of course, many people do a lot of volunteer work for the foundation besides the board members, and all of these folks are going to continue to be involved.

A new slate of officers will be seated in January, and they will have some big shoes to fill.
