Le Grand Du Nord Gravel Cycling Classic a big success

Seven hundred mountain bikers took part in the Saturday, May 28 Le Grand Du Nord annual gravel grinding event that started in Grand Marais. Racers entered in either the marathon, the 54-mile race or pedaled the 110-mile event. They finished across the street from Voyageur Brewing Company, where an after-party was held.

Riders in the 110 mile event climbed more than 5,500 feet as they made their way through the forested back roads.

Each event used Heck/ Le Grand principles of cue card/GPS navigation system. Riders were self supported.

Le Grand Du Nord is one of Cook County’s four established bicycle challenges, and the county boasts more than 2,000 miles of trail for visitors of all experience levels.

Begun in 2016, the race was cancelled in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic, but otherwise it has been an annual event. Le Grand Du Nord has doubled in size from its first couple of races.

The race is organized by Heck of the North Productions, a company based in Duluth, Minn., which began in 2009 as a small group ride. Jeremy Kershaw, founder, and director says, “I have watched The Heck of the North transform the lives of people who have not necessarily identified as ‘athletes.’”
