Lawn mower destroyed by fire in Colvill

Two Colvill Volunteer Fire Department members were in the right place at the right time to assist with a fire on Saturday, June 18. The firefighters passed the home at 3045 East Highway 61 and saw a riding lawnmower billowing smoke.

The firefighters went to the nearby Colvill Fire Hall and called Cook County Law Enforcement at 6:15 p.m. to report that they were responding to a fire at that location. Colvill Fire, Colvill First Responders and Cook County Ambulance were paged.

The fire department arrived back at the lawnmower at 6:26 p.m. to find the machine fully engulfed in flame. They were able to extinguish the fire quickly and Cook County Ambulance was cancelled.

Colvill Fire Chief Tom Thompson said the homeowner, Thomas McDonnell, 57, of Grand Marais, was cutting the grass in the field on his property when the mower caught fire. He was able to park the machine just off the driveway in a low, wet spot, so there was no danger of the fire spreading.

Thompson said the mower was a complete loss and a little bit of grass was burnt, but that was the extent of the damage.

All parties were clear from the scene by 6:51 p.m.
