Law enforcement, Special Olympics athletes, parents, and friends will carry the Flame of Hope through Cook County June 19 and June 20.
The relay will start at the port of entry in Grand Portage and the runners should be at Steve’s Sports around 3:15 p.m. on June 19. Pictures will be taken at Java Moose after a stop at World’s Best Donuts. The first day will end at Putt N Pets.
People are encouraged to come out and cheer the runners/walkers on as they pass by carrying the Flame of Hope.
The final leg of the Torch Run will end in Stillwater with the Summer Games Celebration Ceremonies on June 24.
Started in 1981 when six police officers from Wichita, Kansas carried a torch into a high school, Torch Run for Special Olympics has now become a roaring flame of stability for Special Olympics athletes worldwide, said retired Police Chief Richard LaMunyon who started the run that now has more than 100,000 participants each year.
