Time to get your snow shovels back out.
A Saturday night rain turned to heavy wet snow over Sunday and Monday (April 16-17) this past week as winter made a nasty return to Cook, Lake, and St. Louis County, as well as an unwelcome visit to northern Wisconsin.
Winds gusted up to 55 mph in Grand Marais on Sunday and Monday, creating blizzard conditions at times.
Soils already saturated from the spring melt caused trees to be more susceptible to falling in the high, gusting winds, and quite a few trees succumbed to the unrelenting blow.
According to the National Weather Service, Cook County received 7-12” of snow in the Poplar Lake area on Sunday, while Grand Portage received 6-10”, Tofte and Lutsen 4-8”, and Grand Marais 5-8”.
Flooding and washouts could impact forest roads and gravel roads in the backcountry, so be careful where you drive, advises the National Weather Service.
On Sunday night at 10:48 p.m. Arrowhead Cooperative CEO/General Manager John Twiest said the first power outage “came in around 4:45 p.m., then they (power outages) started another round about 8:15 p.m. Looks to be a long one.”
Following a sunny, 42-degree Tuesday, the rest of the week is supposed to be filled with snow and rain right through Friday, April 21, with snow forecast for April 27.
