Ailee Larson raced barefoot in her first cross country meet of the season, and in doing so, showed the 147 competitors racing in the University of Wisconsin-River Falls Falcon Invitational cross country meet her heels while racing to a new course record of 22:12 over 4k.
For her efforts, Larson was awarded Minnesota International Athletic Conference (MIAC) Athlete-of-the-Week honors.
She led her St. Catherine University teammates to a sixthplace finish in the meet and her time stands as the second-best ever for a St. Kate’s runner, only 14 seconds off the 2009 time of All-American Greta Sieve’s record.
Larson missed indoor and outdoor track last winter/spring because she studied in Peru. But Larson hooked up with a team sponsored by Nike and trained with a good group of male and female distance runners while she was away. Despite running in few track meets in high school, Ailee finished fourth at state in the 800 meters with a time of 2:18. With her distance base and her natural leg speed, Larson is just now rounding into a good distance runner with a bright future if she wishes to run after college.
The junior St. Kate’s runner is from Lutsen. She is the daughter of Mike and Jana Larson.
